So, I'm blogging like everyone else and wondering what it'll lead to. Seems my life is already too busy to add another task, but then....can't finish that thought. I do hope though that it will get me back into writing.
Four weeks ago, my nephew Jonathan was killed in Tampa, Florida. I'm still trying to come to terms with that and with the fact that my neice Alicia was killed the very next week in Guyana. It seems that in some sectors, our value for human life has diminished considerably, and that young people are the ones most at risk for violent death. That's a difficult issue to come to terms with, especially given the jubilation and optimism that Barack Obama's election win has brought about. How do we rationalize those two? With so many young black males dying violently, in jail, addicted or HIV-infected, what is our future? Barack Obama's election to the presidency of the United States of America is a development many did not anticipate. Should it not count for something in the lives of other young black men? Can they not see the possibility of their own lives?
